research in the school
of computing, science & engineering

World class facilities are the basis for the delivery of taught and research postgraduate activity. The CSE research ethos is of developing a culture of solving ‘real world’ problems combined with direct links with industry and commerce. Much of our research activity has been recognised through the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) where the highest rating of 6* was awarded.

The opportunities for postgraduate research fall under four Research Institutes at the University: the IInstitute for Materials Research, the Informatics Research Institute, the Research Institute for the Built and Human Environment and the Institute for Health & Social Care Research.

If you have an area of interest that you think may come under the School of Computing, Science and Engineering please read the following on the various areas of research carried out at Salford.

For information on how to apply for study by reseach please use the contact details provided in this section for an application form and the application procedure.

  • Engineering Materials
  • Functional Materials
  • Theory and Modelling

The Institute was established in 1999 to provide a focus for research on materials at the University. Its members are scientists and engineers who are active in the development, characterisation and exploitation of new materials, both structural and functional. The Institute employs around 30 academic staff, 20 research staff and over 80 research students.

The work of the Institute is divided into the following 12 research groups:

Applied Mathematics
Atomic Collisions in Solids and Ion-Beam Physics
Chemical Physics and Biomaterials
Chemistry & Nanotechnology
Magnetic Materials and Nanostructures
Materials Characterisation & Modelling
Photonics and Nonlinear Science
Polymers
Space and Solar Plasma Physics
Spray Research Group
Stress Analysis (SARG)
Surface Engineering

Please visit our website at www.imr.salford.ac.uk to find out more information about
the above areas of research study including the group members, the group’s facilities and research interests.

Acoustics Research Centre
The Centre was rated 6* (the highest grade) in the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise. Salford University has a 30 year history of acoustics research.

Principal areas include building and architectural acoustics, environmental acoustics, outdoor sound propagation, remote acoustic sensing of metrological conditions, subjective response especially for room acoustics and audio systems, digital signal processing, transducer design and active control.

Salford is one of the two UK universities that provide acoustics training at degree, masters and doctoral level. The Centre has a portfolio of fundamental and

laboratory for acoustics’ instrumentation and thermal testing facilities. The facilities were rebuilt in 2005 with a £2M investment.

Consultancy and commercial projects with the acoustics industry form an important part of the Centre’s work. Its facilities and staff expertise are applied to practical and actual scenarios. As a result, industry and commerce benefit, and the Centre’s courses are kept up-to-date with the current industry practice. These commercial activities also attract funding to support undergraduate and postgraduate ventures.

The Commercial Enterprise Unit has built upon the success of the STaR Centre. The STaR Centre, (Sustainable Technologies and Regeneration) created and run by Professor Rob Jackson, in the main handled all the commercial aspects for the School of Computing, Science & Engineering, as well as being a base for Sustainability and Regeneration Consultancy.

The Commercial Enterprise Unit provides a central focus for commercial activity, whether it be running short courses, providing expert advice, or design and testing. The unit operates with a number of specialist clusters of expertise including: water, energy, waste, acoustics, engineering design, wind tunnels and the environment, and is able to provide bespoke support to local, regional, national and international businesses.

We have worked with small companies, and large companies such as Kelloggs and BNFL.

The Unit is responsible for assisting and coordinating commercial activities
carried out in the Faculty. We work closely with the client to find out how we can assist, then provide them with a quote for work at a competitive price, liaise between them and the academic/technical support while the work is carried out, and then send out a report and invoice once the work is complete.

The Commercial Enterprise Unit operates a number of academic units which include:

  • STaR Centre
  • Acoustic Test Facilities
  • Acoustic Calibration Laboratory
  • Thermal and Calibration Laboratories
  • Structural Engineering Laboratory
  • Virtual Environments
  • Business Creation Unit (BCU)
  • Audio Video Production
